The Necessity of Sleep

Most of the time, I wish I didn’t need to sleep.  I can imagine all the things I can accomplish if I slept only a about 2-3 hours per day.  However, when I did try it, it caught up with me a few days after.  Until now, I feel like my body hasn’t recovered yet.  By 9 pm, I hardly have enough energy to do anything else.  It’s as if my body is automatically slowing down for eventual shut off in an hour or two.

The health risk in sleep deprivation are numerous.  The long term effects include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, weight gain, and depression.  Some feel they are healthy enough to sleep only a few hours every night.  Don’t be deceived.  Your body needs sleep just as much as it needs food.  If you have sleep disorders, go see a doctor.  On the other hand, if you are consciously trying to stay awake, stop the habit.  Whatever gains you earn from additional hours of working, you will lose more than twice when your health deteriorates.
