For those who have not seen the final episode of How I Met Your Mother, stop right here and watch it first. It was one of the longest hours of my life and definitely a disappointment after eagerly awaiting the final answer to the question for 9 years. Whatever the intentions of the writers were, it did become a hot topic with mixed reactions at every corner of the world. Let’s just say I’m on the conservative side of the fence. I watch TV and movies to give me respite from the harsh realities of life. Sure, a really edgy movie showing the dark side of humanity is still part of my watch list, but it’s not one of my favorites. Unfortunately, it was what the writers of How I Met Your Mother went for on the finale after 9 years of fun and laughter. Really???!
Had I known, I would’ve stopped at last week’s episode. That should have been the finale, plus Ted walking up to Tracy with her yellow umbrella. Call me cheesy or delusional, but for 30 minutes a week, I’d like to think that men like Barney can fall in love with one woman and grow old with her. For 30 minutes every week, I’d love to see men like Ted find the one, have kids and see him with his wife wiping tears in their eyes while their daughter takes her own vows in front of the altar. I know . . . I know . . . cheesy and delusional.
C’mon people . . . when I watch The Walking Dead, I brace myself for any of the protagonists to be eaten . . . a 12-year old girl killing her 7-year old sister made me cover my face . . . and I think it’s brilliant. It’s the whole point of the show — it shows how bad it can be if the world is plunged into a zombie apocalypse. But the finale of How I Met Your Mother cheated me from a comedy series to hang onto when I hear of friends getting divorced or a friend fighting a battle with cancer. I see enough of it in real life. It’s not something I want to see between Barney and Robin or Ted and the mother.
Needless to say, I will say what many have gone on ahead of me to voice out their opinion in social media today . . . the finale of How I Met Your Mother was a big disappointment. If the writers and producers were aiming for this to become unforgettable . . . kudos to all you. And to those who have yet to see the whole series and planning to complete it anyway, don’t watch the finale if you want happy endings. Regardless of the finale, I take my hats off to Neil Patrick Harris who has made Barney one of the most incredible and funniest characters to come out of a comedy series. He will be missed. Barney will always be legen . . . wait for it . . . dary!!
