Keep Diabetes in Check

Lately, it has been noticeable how many acquaintances or their relatives are afflicted with diabetes or, at the very least, have complained that their blood sugar is high. Many nutritionists believe this is primarily attributed to how our diets have evolved. We can also surmise that food available for our consumption cause our sugar levels to rise. However, it should be noted that food intake does not directly cause diabetes. There are myths surrounding the cause of the disease such as large intake of sweets or food high in carbohydrates. What does cause high blood sugar levels is obesity and lack of exercise. It can also be due to poor diet, specifically, those that are low in fiber and protein and a high content of refined products. And it is worthy to remember that the bodies inability to produce insulin can be genetic. Thus, physicians have always warned those who have a history of diabetes in their family to be vigilant and focus on preventing the onset of the disease.

A more comprehensive source of information regarding diabetes is the Reader’s Digest website (RD.com - Managing Diabetes). It provides different ways of understanding diabetes, controling blood sugar, and preventing it. An article I found useful in the site is “Your Diabetes Prevention Plan.” According to the article, those at risk from diabetes can easily prevent it by following a set of guidelines that should be vigilantly followed to keep it at bay. Among those included in the list are (a) maintain a nutritious diet high in fiber and protein (low fat), (b) shed some pounds, (c) exercise regularly, (d) visit your doctor regularly for monitoring, (e) take vitamin E if possible, and (f) manage stress levels.

Other helpful information are also available at RD.com such as diabetes-friendly recipes, and other information and tips to beat the disease. It is a manageable disease. Just stick to the plan and lower your risks of acquiring it or worsening the problem. And keep yourself informed with the latest at RD.com.
