Heath Ledger as The Joker May Win Oscars

faith| July 4, 2008 5:23 pm

Heath Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker in the upcoming Batman flick, The Dark Knight, is not quite that of the typical villain in a superhero movie. The character was darker than it has ever been. The character was darker than it has ever been. There were earlier rumors while shooting that Ledger’s portrayal was remarkable. However, some speculated that it may be a publicity stunt for the film. All doubts dissipated during the screening of the movie.

The persona that Ledger embodied was maniacal and psychotic, leading Gary Oldman (playing the the cop Jim Gordon) to comment that he was arguably the greatest screen villain the he has ever seen. Filmmaker and comic fan Kevin Smith likewise gave a thumbs up to Ledger saying that the actor didn’t so much as perform the character as he disappeared completely into the role.

Faith in the Family

faith| 3:37 am

I think it is just about the right time that I give a little more of myself into the blog. I have tried to keep the blog as objective as possible in the interest of readers worldwide. I intended the blog to be a collection of interesting topics about life. Then again, maybe I can provide readers a bit of an idea about my life, even for just this time.

The reason I mentioned that now may be a good time is because my mother’s side of the family rediscovered each other again after quite a long time. My mom suffered from Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) in May and has been in the hospital since. Not to make this a sad story for anyone — she is recovering now which surprised doctors because of her age. It was this unfortunate sacrifice that my Mom had to undergo that brought the family closer again despite the miles between most of us. I give credit to the miracle of technology that brought us closer through email groups, mobile phones, and internet chats.

My mom’s sickness has taught me one thing — no matter how far apart you are, you can always lean on your family for support at a time when you need it most. Friends and lovers may come and go, but your family will be there for you regardless of the circumstances.

Mom has now recovered from a near-fatal disease. I am fortunate to have found friends and family who had my back right from the start. If there were anything that helped my mother get well, they were prayers and wishes of people who have become part of my life one way or the other.

I am tempted to show the world pics of the family that I am proud of (especially the ones from the 70’s). However, for fear of getting roasted alive by my cousins, I’d rather not. But let me present to everyone my grandmother, a lovely lady who left us too early and deprived her grandchildren of the chance to sit on her lap and listen to bedtime stories. I likewise send my compliments to my cousin who has diligently kept this vintage photo in great condition that will surely be appreciated by our descendants to come.

Unforgettable Hollywood Pick-Up Lines

faith| 12:21 am

If you want a list of worst pick-up lines, the list is a long one in Hollywood movies. While we cringe at some of them now, you have to admit that they probably made you flush and giggle the first time you watched them. The truth is, one of my favorite movies is froth with these pick-up lines. I love Jerry Macguire. I am trying to remember now when the lines in the movie became part of the worst pick-up line list. During the time of screening, it never occurred to me they were crappy. I guess they start becoming crap when people start to say they were crap.

When I think about it, the lines were actually ok. Problem is, it’s not possible to use them anymore because the movie had become so popular. And maybe we were hoping deep inside that it would’ve been great if the movie never made any money. The lines would have worked in real life if there were not so many people who watched it.

I was wondering if they would work in the Ultimate Flirting Championship launched by Extreme Style by VO5. I did try them and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself while I was playing the game. I started getting responses from movie pick-up lines too. Before we knew it, we were having fun dishing out Hollywood lines. Unfortunately, I didn’t know enough to win. Someone else was better at Hollywood lines which included movies I haven’t even seen yet. Maybe I don’t have Victory Hair. I will have to try my luck some other time.

Oil Price Hits Record High at almost $146/Barrel

faith| 12:02 am

Oil prices hit $145.85 per barrel earlier in the day following expected drops in US oil stockpiles and comments from Saudi Arabia’s minister suggested that its country will not boost production.  These all came on a day when reports showed unemployment continued to climb.

The Energy Department reported Wednesday that the US oil supplies fell by 2 million barrels last week which was 800,000 barrels more than forecasts by analysts and Platts.  This was further compounded by rumors of possible attacks on Iran.  Traders were worried that Tehran might halt oil shipments going through the Strait of Hormuz in the event of an attack by Israel or the US.  Approximately 40% of the world’s oil tanker traffic passes through this choke-point.  The Iran Foreign Minister confirmed this possibility by indicating that they would defend their security by seizing control of the strait in the event of an attack.  Meanwhile, US military allegedly vowed that they would ensure that the strait remains open.

With the world’s most precious commodity now running short in supply, the world may indeed start going crazy.  For the sake of world peace, I certainly hope we all stay sane and remember that mankind survived even before gas was ever discovered as a source of energy.
