Stem cells have been a controversial discovery for the past years. Stem cells are characterized by their ability to renew themselves, and thus, may be considered the body’s repair system. Studies have shown that stem cells can treat a lot of diseases that have no known cures. Research on stem cells were initially the center of ethical debate because starting a stem cell lime requires the destruction of a human embryo. However, recent studies have shown that embryonic stem cell lines can be generated using a single-cell biopsy which allows creation without embryonic destruction.

With these new findings, it may now be possible to harvest stem cells from a baby’s umbilical cord blood or a woman’s menstrual fluid. It may now be possible to protect ourselves from any future disease that can be fatal. However, it is important to note that stem cells should be harvested at a time when the body is still at its healthiest peak.
