Everyone of us has a different way of coping with a problem. During difficult times, we either clam up or find diversions to help us deal with a problem while a solution is still far from coming. I usually pretend there is no problem and go on with my life as if nothing is wrong. Within this denial stage, I still try to do what is necessary but refuse to accept that there is a problem. Luckily, a solution comes that eventually makes everything go away.

On the other hand, there are problems that may be more difficult or people who find it more difficult to handle problems. These people who are more delicate end up finding diversions that create bigger problems than the real problem. I am talking about people who turn to alcohol or drugs. Sometimes, addiction is not limited to substance abuse. Others turn to gambling or even sex. These kinds of addiction likewise need treatment because of the damage that it causes the individual.

It may be cliche’ but it is true that the first step in treating an addiction is recognizing it or acknowledging that it exists. The next step is just as difficult — realizing the need for professional treatment. Drug Rehabilitation is especially necessary for those who have already caused damage to themselves and to other people. Getting these people into Drug Rehab would be hitting 2 birds with one stone — substance abuse is treated and the psychological problems brought about by hurting other people is also treated.
