In what appears to be a landmark case against the world’s online auction giant, a French court convicted eBay for selling counterfeit goods and ordered to pay €20,000 ($30,000) in damages to French luxury group Hermes. In the court decision, the court held eBay directly responsible for the sale on its website of three Hermes bags including two fakes, for a total of €3,000.

The auction site was held jointly liable with the woman who sold the counterfeit items, the decision reads:

German Parents Offer Baby at Ebay for 1 Euro ($1.57)

It’s sad that there are more news of atrocities than kindness lately. After news broke out about a father imprisoning his daughter for years in the basement and impregnating her, now a German couple offers their 7-month old baby at Ebay for 1 Euro.

“Offering my nearly new baby for sale, as it has gotten too loud. It is a male baby, nearly 28 inches (70 cm) long and can be used either in a baby carrier or a stroller,” police quoted the ad as reading.

Police are currently investigating the 23-year old mother and 24-year old father for child trafficking. No offers were made for the child in the two hours and 30 minutes the ad was posted on Tuesday. EBay later deleted the posting, but assisted police in tracking down the parents.

The mother claims that the ad was merely a joke. How come no one is laughing?

If You’re Sure it’s Not Really Junk, It Can Be Someone Else’s Treasure

Since I mentioned that ecommerce is the market of the future, this fairly gives you an idea on what I’m getting at. Yes, I’d like to be part of ecommerce and tap the potential earnings that I can make from that market. I got my first crack at online shopping through Amazon. It was the perfect venue for a newbie online shopper. After successfully completing my transaction there, I dared to venture into more dangerous territories. I knew that if I wanted to get better value for my money, Ebay was the store for me. There have been so many urban legends and controversies about EBay that most people just ignore the shop altogether. But the moment I stepped in, I got hooked. I was able to get designer bags at prices I never dreamed of. Perfumes could be had at $10 and even branded shoes were half the price of those in the malls.

Of course, if there are jewels sold for a penny, there are also junk that are actually junk. After getting my first junk, I learned to be more cautious. Now, I check descriptions for that missing word that was intentionally kept out or check feedbacks on sellers. I even found out that it would be a good idea to stay away from Ebay members who have more than 1 id. And before I purchase or bid on anything, I knew the questions to ask — did this item expire yesterday? Of course, if there are crooks in Ebay, there are also clowns that try to make the experience something to laugh about. Just to prove how funny Ebay can be, check out this “Used Fish n Chip Wrapping.” The seller describes it as “wrappings that still smell of vinegar, chips, and fish. The fish n chips were excellent, unfortunately they are now gone.” It had a starting bid price of $0.99 and now, just 3 hours away before the auction ends, it has a going price of $10. How much do you think unwashed underwear would go?

I did mention that I would venture into Ebay, didn’t I? Well, not to worry. I have no plans to sell used underwear or chocolate wrappings. I’ve already looked through my closet and gathered used and brand new items that I can start auctioning at Ebay. The hard part is setting up all the details to post my items. It has already been a month and yet I haven’t found the time to get started.

If you’re pressed for time like me, there is actually a better way to do it. The answer to our dilemma is the local iSold It store nearest you. Just drop off the items you want to sell on Ebay at iSold It and let them take care of the rest. Your item will be given a fair value, get photographed professionally, and get enticing copywriting. All these you get for a very competitive commission that iSold It deducts when they send you your check for items sold. There are no upfront fees, so you don’t pay unless they sell your item. If you have a target net price that you want for your item, they will work with you to meet this target.

So, collect all those junk taking up space in your closet and find out what they are worth. There might be a treasure in there someone has been waiting for all along. Unless you’re trying to be funny, just make sure it’s not literally junk.

I am a Purse Addict

I really don’t remember when I started getting addicted to handbags. Now, I feel a certain comfort and thrill purchasing a really good handbag. Even while walking around, I tend to look at bags that people are carrying. My fascination is not limited to ladies’ handbags. I also find myself admiring those hip messenger bags that men carry around. I know I am not the only one with this inclination. I read about women who have entire closets of bags they barely use.

Due to my limited budget, my fascination can’t go so far as collecting as much as other women do. And there are certain types that I really don’t find attractive, no matter how expensive like the Hermes birkin bag. If I am not mistaken, it is considered  one of the most expensive bags in the world retailing at about US$16,000 per piece — you can buy an entire warehouse of bags at this price. Hermes is known to use exotic animal skins for their bags such as ostrich or crocodile. There are special or limited editions Hermes that cost even more and have rich women queued to purchase it for as long as 6 years. To give you an idea, the Hermes Birkin Fauve Crocodile Toffee pictured on the right is up for bid in an internet site with a starting price of U$55,000. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I keep thinking how many people in Africa can be fed at that price. There are indeed limits to my infatuation. I just don’t think this bag is worth the price even if I had the money to afford it.

I go for soft leather bags. I have soft leather bags from Celine and Hush Puppies. I even like bags combining leather and straw or woven native materials. One of my favorites that was a gift to me is a woven native Esprit bag with leather trims and handles — simple but chic. I have a similar Etienne Aigner bag stored in my closet. As you may have noticed, I am still on the cheaper side of the spectrum. Do you want to know what my dream bag is? No, its not the Chanel quilted lambskin bag — the style seems to fit older women. And I don’t like the speedy monogram Louis Vuitton bags that I see everyone carrying around. My dream bag is a medium Balenciaga Motorcycle City bag in brown or tan. The bag is made of soft goatskin and retails over US$1,000. That about estimates the annual fee I pay for one of my son’s tuition. Well, someday I know I will get one. For now I can just enjoy watching. The owner of the company I work for has a daughter who visits the office regularly and she carries the exact Balenciaga City bag shown above. The first time I got on the elevator with her, I was staring at her bag, practically drooling. It was definitely authentic because I can see how soft it was and the grains on the leather were visible. An authentic Balenciaga droops when empty while a replica keeps its form even with nothing inside. I considered getting a replica. But I don’t think my heart can take it.

I guess I will have to wait it out till I’ve saved enough. For now, I am content getting decent leather bags. My target purchases in the near future is a Fossil leather bag or maybe a cheap Colehaan from Ebay if I get lucky. Otherwise, admiring them from a distance will suffice.
